Just In: ‘Bridgerton’ season 3 to focus on Penelope and Colin’s love story

Showrunners have diverged from the book series' order to focus on fan favourites, Penelope and Colin.

Netflix’s hit series, Bridgerton, is diverging from Julia Quinn’s book series to explore the love story between Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan), the Derry Girls star revealed during Sunday’s FYSEE panel.

Confirming the news on Instagram, Coughlan said: “Like Lady Whistledown I’ve been keeping quite a big secret for quite a long time… but I can finally tell you that @bridgertonnetflix Season Three is Colin and Penelope’s Story.

During the season two finale of Bridgerton, the last development between Penelope and Colin was the former saying he would never marry her — a devastating blow to her character who had been invested in the Bridgerton heir for years.

The first two seasons of the television show followed Quinn’s first two novels. Season one focused on Daphne Bridgerton’s (Phoebe Dynevor) romance with The Duke, Simon (Regé-Jean Page), and the second honed in on Anthony Bridgerton’s (Jonathan Bailey) complicated love story with Kate (Simone Ashley).

The third of Quinn’s novels was due to zone in on Benedict Bridgerton, but this will likely be pushed to a later date, with the fourth novel having been moved up.
