Kim Cattrall praised for setting boundaries after criticising ‘Sex and the City’ reboot

Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones in the original 'Sex and The City' franchise, has made her feelings clear on the series’ recent reboot, 'And Just Like That'.

Speaking to Variety, Cattrall discussed the spin-off for the very first time. “I certainly heard about it. And I’ve come to the conclusion that really the greatest compliment I could have as an actor is to be missed,” she said after being asked if she had watched the show, which stars Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbs) and Kristin Davis (Charlotte York).

The actress famously said that she didn’t want to reprise the role following 2010’s Sex and The City 2, and her ensuing, public feud with her co-star, Parker.

Cattrall also categorised the treatment of Samantha as “odd” in the reboot. When she was asked about the storyline which sees Carrie fall out with Samantha, she replied, “Oh yes. I heard this. Well, that feels different than the Samantha that I played.”

In And Just Like That, Samantha’s character is kept alive via a stream of text messages to Carrie — a choice that Cattrall also found “odd”. “It’s odd, isn’t it? I don’t know how to feel about it,” Cattrall stated. “It’s so finite for me, so it doesn’t continue. I think I would ponder it more if I didn’t have something like Queer As Folk or How I Met Your Father. That’s kind of where I’ve centred around. This feels like an echo of the past. Other than the really wonderful feeling of – it’s rare in my business – people wanting more, especially at 65. That feels powerful, that I’ve left something behind that I’m so proud of. I loved her. I loved her so, so, so much. It’s tough competition. The original show is in all of our imaginations. But for me, it feels clean.”

Cattrall also took aim at a potential plotline in the third film, which involved her character receiving unwanted sexual images from Miranda’s teenage son, Brady. “You didn’t feel like Samantha was progressing,” the interviewer asked, to which she replied, “That’s an understatement.”

Now, fans are praising the 65-year-old for setting clear boundaries. “Huge fan of Kim Cattrall’s boundaries, what a role model,” wrote one Twitter user, adding: “That it’s entirely consistent with the character of Samantha is a bonus.”

Another wrote, “The power of having boundaries and saying ‘no’. Wowsers. ⁦@KimCattrall⁩ is an icon for the ages.”

“What I can say is, when I look at this SATC promo shot, all I see are Kim Cattrall’s boundaries and it is truly a model to live by. I love her quote, ‘I don’t want to be in a situation,’” a third commented.
