Kodie Shane is hip-hop’s newest rock star

Meet the Atlanta native with lyrics for days and a Rick Owens obsession.

Some people have to work extra hard at. Some people just have it. Kodie Shane is the latter. A veteran of the music industry and still just 20 years old, the Atlanta artist spent her youth running around recording studios.

Growing up as the niece of 80s icon Cherelle and the younger sister of Brandi Williams, one-time member of noughties girl group Blaque – it was never in her plan to do anything but music.

It was Coach K (the mogul who manages Gucci Mane and Migos) who first put Kodie on via Lil Yachty’s Sailing Team a few years back.  As the only female member of the crew, Kodie consistently brought the fire with her unique lyrical style and swagger.   Going solo with 2016’s ‘Sad’-  she articulated the melancholy of a whole generation.

We’re here to talk about ‘Young Heartthrob’ – her debut album, a high energy, candid take on her experiences of being a young woman right now. Speaking frankly about her sexuality, girl crushes and emotional lows with dexterous beats from long-term collaborator Matty P, it’s a vibe from start to finish.

Hi Kodie, what’s happening in your world right now?

My album just dropped so I’m feeling great!  I’m happy that people are accepting the music and it seems they have an understanding for it. Right now, I’m preparing for my tour which starts in February. Trying to get my summer body ready a little early! Ha!

Which tracks are the most personal to you on the record?

‘Shut Up’ and ‘Lost’ ARE two of the most personal tracks I created on the album. Both of the tracks express the emotions that I was having at exactly the time I wrote them so they’re spot on, you feel me?

The sound you’ve created encompasses so many different influences. Do you feel we’re in an era where artists can finally break free of labels?

Yes, I hope so. Some people consider me a hip-hop artist, others might say R&B or even rap.  I liken myself to a blend of all the genres that have influenced me. Something like a hip-hop R&B rockstar!

You’re also outspoken in terms of not being labelled in your personal life.  Is it important for you to be a role model to other young women in this way?

It’s very important to me that other young women and men look to me to for encouragement to stay true to themselves and what they believe in and stand strong for that.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about you?

I’m not sure but I’ve heard that people feel I’m a bit unapproachable but that’s not the case at all. I’m super down to earth and I love meeting people and hearing their stories. I like to have a good time!

You’ve collabed with everyone from Lil Yachty to Trippie Redd – who’s the craziest in the studio?

I’m the craziest in the studio! No cap!!

How do you get what you want in the studio when you are working with producers?

Typically, I try to make sure the vibe stays right, that everyone is comfortable and that they’re familiar with my music and where I’m trying to go. If I’m honest, it’s a constant struggle so you go into it with the hopes that everyone brings their A game and magic happens!

We heard you’re pretty obsessed with Rick Owens, tell us more! What are some of your favourite pieces you own from him?

My Rick Owens robe, which is made for outdoors wear is my fave right now and if you haven’t noticed I have a particular pair of Rick Owens jeans that I can’t live without. They’re like my comfort blankie.

Who are some of the other designers that you are into right now?

JW Anderson. Virgil Abloh (OFF WHITE) – I love what he’s doing!, Alexander McQueen, Sandro Paris (new love!), Chanel and Balenciaga.”

You come from a very musical family – what are some of the best pieces of advice you got from your Dad and sister?

Our dad has always reminded us both to ‘stay humble and sweet!

We’ve got 24 hours in Atlanta – where should we hit up?

Breakfast at Another Broken Egg – shrimp & grits.

Lenox Mall and Phipps Plaza FOR high fashion / who’s who shopping.

Little Five Points for artsy cultural shopping and site seeing. JR Crickets for wings. Edgewood for late night cocktails with the culture.

R Thomas for late night eats and Magic City for grown and sexy fun!

What are the 3 albums you can’t live without?

Frank Ocean “BLOND”

Drake ‘Take Care’

Little Wayne ‘Tha Carter III’
