Cuco is changing the music game from his bedroom.
A multi-instrumentalist from Hawthrone, California at just 19 he’s launched a full EP that he fully wrote, produced, mixed and mastered. Born Omar Banos, he first started creating music at the age of 8, by 16 he was independently releasing music and by the summer of 2016 he’d dropped his first mixtape Wannabewithu. From heartbreak-chords to playful lead trumpets, his sounds were and still are refreshingly innovative. His first bilingual track, ‘Lo Que Siento’ is killing it with over 3.5 million streams on Spotify alone, and his EP has resonated with fans everywhere. We caught up with the digi-age trailblazer to find out how he’s made it on his own as a true Generation Z kid from Cali, so let Cuco be your Internet guide…
What would you like to see more of online? What about less of?
I just want to see positivity. Nothing else.
What or who is the best account you follow? The worst?
What’s the craziest thing you’ve read about yourself online?
Apparently people say I cry during sex or something like that. IDK why.
What’s your favourite meme?
My favourite meme is that crucified Po (the Teletubby) in a classroom.
What’s your earliest memory of the Internet?
I remember playing RuneScape all the time when I was younger, my only reason for the internet at the time .
Is the internet a good or bad thing for music?
The internet is fantastic for music, no need to rely on a label honestly.
How many followers represent success?
I don’t think there’s an amount that represents success, I think positive impact represents success. Whether it’s 10 or 10 million followers, if your work creates an impact, you’re doing it right.
Finally…what’s going on in your life?
Honestly I’m just with my girlfriend like 50% of the time and the other 50% I’m working on music or music related things.
