Let Hamzaa be your internet guide

Britain's new saviour of soul Hamzaa lets us know what's on her digital hit list.

At just 19 years old Hackney’s Hamzaa is a soul legend in the making. Releasing her debut single “Stranded Love” this summer and following it up with “You” and “Breathing”, she has accumulated over one million streams, found the time to put in a jaw-dropping live performance on Jools Holland and this month will play a sold-out show in London. Before her she hits the big time we grab five minutes to find out where she spends her time online.

What would you like to see more of online? What about less of?

I would like to see more informed opinions and less ignorance. I would like to see what is really going on in the world and not what we are being conditioned to know of or what ‘they’ want us to see. I also want to see more people talking about art and music, those things always spark good and healthy conversation.

What or who is the best account you follow? The worst?

The best account I follow is @wuzg00d because her style is so cool! If there was a worst I would’ve unfollowed them by now, haha!

What’s the craziest thing you’ve read about yourself online?

I feel like nothing crazy has been written about me yet, thank goodness

 What’s your favourite meme?

The one with the guy that blinks in astonishment, hahahaha that gets me every time!

What’s your earliest memory of the Internet?

AOL – I remember, using that as the search engine and it being so slow, OMG!

Is the Internet a good or bad thing for music?

I feel like it has maybe ruined the experience of listening to music for its quality and actual talent, not because it’s what’s hot. However, it has definitely helped in getting music heard far and wide quicker.

How many followers represent success?

I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive, success is very subjective to the person, so maybe, for one person it does represent success and for another it can mean absolutely nothing. For me personally having a big following would help with getting my music heard further around the world, however it doesn’t determine my actual success in my career.

Finally…what’s going on in your life?

Right now , I’m figuring out friendships , and what kind of energy I want in my life , trying to find focus and direction in ways that don’t relate to my career , because as much as it is me and I am it , I can’t ignore the things that happen to me on a daily with things that don’t concern my career, it’s a never ending cycle of self-discovery, whether it be through personal disputes or through letting things go and out of my life.
