Let Them Revolt: Nabil Nayal’s ode to Marie Antoinette for AW19

Take a look inside the collaborative collection with The School of Historical Dress...

For AW19, Nabil Nayal is embarking on a journey back in time, to the decadence of Queen Marie Antoinette and her eighteenth century extravagance. The once controversial icon has become memorialised through pop culture time and time again (do we need to recall Sofia Coppola’s dazzling feminist film adaptation), but for Nayal she proved herself a muse in new ways. Less let them eat cake, more Let Them Revolt.

Exploring the tumultuous reign of Marie Antoinette, Nabil Nayal found the intricacies of late eighteenth century dress to be powerful inspiration for this season’s collection. Filtering the delicate artefacts through his modern lens, Nabil has brought power to pastels and tenaciousness to tulle.
