Listen: Sky Ferreira releases first new song in three years

The singer makes a powerful pop return with ‘Don’t Forget’.

Sky Ferreira has finally returned with a lush, powerful pop single which recalls the sound of her beloved 2013 album Night Time, My Time and previews her long awaited follow up record. ‘Don’t Forget’ features a bombastic electro pop beat filled with 80’s synths. Ferreira wrote the single with Jorge Elbrecht and Tamaryn Brown. Elbrecht also mixed the single and produced it with Ferreira.

“Honey, you can see that it’s a rotten world/ I don’t need you to save me,” Ferreira sings on the track, insisting she’s not a damsel in distress. In a new interview with Vulture, Ferreira explained that the song “wasn’t supposed to be apocalyptic, but in some ways it is.” She continued: “I felt very stifled for a long time, and I still do. It’s not that I wanted to burn people’s houses on fire or something; it is a little more symbolic. It’s about being put in these situations for a long time. It’s a bit of freeing myself, but not in the most conventional way. Because I don’t feel free, necessarily.”

‘Don’t Forget’ comes three years after Ferreira’s last single, ‘Downhill Lullaby’, which was released in 2019. Both tracks will appear on Ferreira’s long-awaited second album, Masochism. Ferreira said she’s “100 percent confident” the album will come out on the heels of the new single. “I think there’s some things that need to be finished, and I would like to write some more songs,” she said. “A lot of it’s done. It’s just more mixing, rerecording certain parts, changing certain lyrics. It’s little details.” She also said she plans to announce a tour soon.
