Madlib reveals he’s “finishing up” new Mac Miller album

Maclib, the collaborative project from the late rapper Mac Miller and legendary hip-hop producer Madlib, could finally see the light of day.

In a new interview with Sway In The Morning, Madlib revealed that he’s “finishing up” work on the album along with work for Erykah Badu and Planet Asia. No release date is revealed, but Madlib says that he has the approval of Miller’s estate.

News of Maclib‘s existence first emerged in February 2019 during a Thelonious Martin interview with DJ Booth. Martin said that Miller and Madlib had begun work on the project in 2018, prior to Miller’s passing of an accidental drug overdose. 

“By early 2015, Mac had batches of Madlib’s beats and was recording songs,” the statement read. Over the years, Madlib would preview the completed songs during his live DJ sets. However, at the time of the statement’s publication, Madlib said that “there are no official plans” to release the music officially. That, it seems, has changed.

As hype built around the project, Madlib posted a since-deleted update on his official website in March 2019 and described the timeline of their collaboration, which began with a Miller verse recorded for Piñata, the 2015 Madlib and Freddie Gibbs collaboration.

The Maclib EP will be the second posthumous release from Miller, following 2020’s Circles.
