In today’s unexpected news, The 1975 frontman Matty Healy has decided to quit social media because he wants to stop being a “fucking arsehole.”
The singer, who deleted his Instagram on Sunday, said he planned to stop voicing his opinions on Instagram and Twitter, claiming he’s “had enough” of the sites.
According to The Sun, Healy made the announcement on stage in Adelaide, Australia, on Monday. “It’s because everything happens in eras. The 1975 is a very eras band,” he said. The era of me being a fucking arsehole is coming to an end. I’ve had enough.”
“I perform all the time, and it’s my job, and I love doing this, but I can’t perform off the stage any more as I just want to be a bloke.”
Healy has become increasingly polarising as the years have gone on, especially following The 1975’s most recent tour for their fifth studio album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language. Throughout the tour, Healy would go viral multiple times for his weird and wacky behaviour, which included eating raw steaks and pulling fans out from the crowd for an on-stage snog.
The star has also had his fair share of controversies on social media as of late, specifically in a supposed feud between him and fellow artist Yungblud. Healy took to social media a week after he was seemingly branded a “privileged white guy” by the Yorkshire artist, sharing a video where he mimicked Yungblud’s accent with a filter placing the word “Emo” on both cheeks.
It comes after Healy faced criticism from fans following a podcast appearance where he discussed New York rapper Ice Spice’s heritage. Speaking on The Adam Friedland Show with his bandmates, he debated if the singer was Hawaiian or Chinese and impersonated foreign accents before saying he believed Harry Styles “gets a free pass” over alleged “queer-bating.”
