Meet Glowie, the Icelandic musician championing body positivity

Watch the video for her debut single "Body" below.

Glowie is a pop star to believe in. At just 21 years old the Icelandic singer makes music to inspire women everywhere, championing body positivity in her debut single “Body”. “Most people at some point in their lives feel insecure about their bodies, because someone or something is telling them they’re not good enough,” she says. “We’re all comparing ourselves to one another and we’re taught that there’s only one way to be beautiful. This is something that needs to change.”

Growing up listening to the likes of the Sugababes and Destiny’s Child, Glowie is 2k18’s answer to girl power pop.

Your song is all about body positivity, why was it an important subject for you?

It’s important for everyone, most people feel at some point in their lives insecure with their bodies because someone or something tells them they’re not good enough. We’re all comparing ourselves to one another and we’re taught that there’s only one way to be beautiful and that’s why so many people change themselves, they do this and that to look more like that ideal beautiful person. This is something that needs to change and my song ‘Body’ is my way of helping with exactly that.

Do you feel that its discussed enough in music, particularly amongst women?

To be honest I don’t really know how to answer that, I think artists should be allowed to say whatever they want in their music, that’s part of being an artist. Body positivity is one of the things I want to talk about in my music, so that’s what I’m gonna do.

You were born and raised in Reykjavik – how did the city and Iceland encourage your musicality, what inspired you there?

I don’t really know, being an artist in Iceland is like being a kid in Candyland, you have all the freedom to do whatever you want in art and you have all the time in the world to try this and that and think outside of the box, do something crazy. It made me who I am today, as an artist, I really love to break the rules and I’m not afraid of being myself and being weird and that is coming out in my art I think. But like I said, I don’t really know cause I just am the way I am and I’m not aware of what exactly inspired me in Iceland, I guess it was everything in Iceland that inspired me, just being there.

Scandi pop has always been revered, what do you think makes it stand out?

I think the weather, nature, people and the cultures really affect the music that is made there. The music is quite dark and deep and that’s just a reflection of what’s around people in Scandinavia, it comes naturally.

You grew up in the 90s. What are some of your favourite 90s songs, styles and movies?

Umm I guess it’s “Killing Me Softly” by The Fugees and ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis,  and for movies it would be The Silence of the Lambs and Titanic.

What can we expect form you next?

It’s a mystery.
