Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons Deliver Glitterati Glamour At Prada AW21

With sparkle coats and oodles of knitwear, the duo was giving us joyful contradictions among what has been a drab year.

Your social media feed is no doubt already awash with images from Prada’s AW21 show, a testament to how much we’ve been missing glamour in these long days of loungewear and existential angst.  Exploring the idea of change and transformation (hopefully to a post-lockdown world) Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons’ womenswear collection explores the joy in contradiction. With Miuccia’s approach to amping up femininity to paradoxical effects and Raf’s gender neutral leanings, their offering is unexpected, reinterpreting menswear codes and delighting in femme details.

Whether it be glitter, knits or form-fitting tops, everything was on the table,  rules be damned! The body is emphasised with fitted bodysuits in stretch jacquard-knit, allowing for a freedom of movement that will hopefully carry us onto a dance floor in the not-so-distant future. While these items suggest action, activity and dynamism, pleats add a softer edge whereas tailored suits give a more classic feel. The collection delights in shaking up the boundaries of convention and the essential languages of clothes: elegant evening-gowns become utilitarian jumpsuits and tailored coats are executed in bright, eye-popping colour. In short, clothing for a brave new world.
