Oscars 2023: ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ cleans up with 11 nominations

Following closely behind was ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ and ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ with nine nominations each.

The Oscars nominations have been announced today, as the excitement of awards season continues. Riz Ahmed and Alison Williams hosted the announcement presentation from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, California.

Everything Everywhere All At Once took home the most nominations with a whopping 11, which included nods for Michelle Yeoh and her supporting co-stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan. The multiverse exploring flick is up for best picture, director (for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), costume design, editing, original song, original score and original screenplay.

Following closely behind with nine nominations, as expected, is Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin – which starred Colin Farrell and Ben Gleeson – and All Quiet on the Western Front.

Somewhat unusually, the prestigious best picture category included films that performed brilliantly at the box office as well as critical darlings, with Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way Of Water and Elvis all making the cut.

In another first for the category, two sequels were nominated – Top Gun and Avatar. Only eight sequels have ever made the cut in Oscar history, and never before have two been chosen in a single year.

There were surprises in the best actress field, with Ana de Armas being nominated for her role as Marilyn Monroe in Blonde, Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans and Andrea Riseborough in To Leslie.

Among the other surprise nominees this year is Paul Mescal who received a best actor nod for his role in the father-daughter drama Aftersun. He is nominated alongside Austin Butler, Brendan Fraser, Bill Nighy, and fellow Irish actor Colin Farrell.

This year’s Oscars will take place on March 12th in Hollywood in a ceremony hosted by talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. The full list of nominees can be found below.
