Paris’ We Love Green is championing a more sustainable festival model

For many of us, festivals are the pinnacle of summer. World-class musicians, up-and-coming talent, irresistible food, a welcome helping of booze and, overall, impeccable vibes alongside your best mates. But, let’s be honest, if there’s one thing festivals need to improve on, it’s general cleanliness and not having a damning effect on the environment – I think we’re all pretty sick of wandering around festival grounds only to find a sea of litter on every blade of grass. Luckily, that’s forward thinking festival We Love Green’s mission (not just dealing with empty cups).

Known as the world’s leading sustainable festival, the Paris event is the nine-time recipient of A Greener Festival’s ‘Outstanding’ award. And this year, they’re set to continue that momentum, switching to complete vegetarianism in the backstage areas and inside the festival for 2023. Continuing their commitment to responsible gastronomy, the festival will feature no plastics on site; meanwhile, they remain one of the only festivals in the world to be powered by 100% sustainable energy.

We Love Green proves that even with a focus on sustainability, you can still attract some class music acts. Included on their diverse line-up is US rap star Pusha T, French duo The Blaze and British MC Little Simz. Elsewhere, Skrillex, Bon Iver, Tems, Yung Lean and Nx Worries (Anderson .Paak and Knxledge) will also be welcomed to Paris. The bill presents a variety of stars from across the globe, multiple genres, and various levels of notoriety. Sure, it may be the headliners that catch the eye, but the festival also represents an opportunity for young artist’s to make their mark. All the artists that will appear will feature across a set of five stages that also host a selection of speakers and restaurant owners.

If you’re in the mood for a break from all the hustle and bustle of the acts and are looking for something to keep your brain ticking over, then you might want to check out the Think Tank. The goal for this stage is to “allow a better understanding of our changing world, deconstruct stereotypes and to imagine alternatives to existing models.” The Think Tank will feature speakers across various areas of expertise, including social justice and climate activist Camille Etienne.

This year, the festival will also showcase an open-air creative workshop, while sport also plays a big part in the proceedings. A break and flat track will be joined by a skate park, which includes a gigantic vertical ramp that will host jaw-dropping demos from international pros – while two intermediate ramps will allow the next generation of skaters to show off their talents.
