Tom Ford’s AW20 show will make you want to get a mullet

Whether it’s wet look hair at Marni or ‘70s flipped out ends at Telfar, we round up the best hairspo at Milan Men's Fashion Week and Pitti Uomo AW20.

We all know the gender binary is on its way out, particularly in the world of fashion where unisex collections are increasingly common and brands like Art School and Harris Reed are pioneering non-binary fashion collections. When it comes to gleaning inspiration for our next season looks, then, gender restrictions should be no concern.

Yet, whilst conversations around genderless fashion and makeup have gained traction in recent years, hair is all too often overlooked. When it comes to gender, however, hair can be an important tool for expression and experimentation; something that the flowing manes and crimped curls at Milan Men’s Fashion Week and Pitti Uomo testified to.

With that in mind, we’ve gathered together a selection of the best hair looks for AW20, as spotted at Milan Men’s Fashion Week and Pitti Uomo, to inspire all you girls, boys and non-binary babes reading at home.

Wet Look at Marni

Wet-look — but not as you know it. Whilst slicked-back, gelled looks have long been the go-to for hair stylists hoping to evoke a sense of minimalist futurism, Marni interpreted the trend slightly differently this season. Playing with weighting and texture, hair flowing past the shoulders was smoothed down with wet-look gel to lie poker-straight against the face and chest. We predict that this ‘do, which gives lengthier styles a high-fashion upgrade, will be one of the haute beauté looks of 2020.

Flipped Ends at Telfar

Flipped ends at Telfar summoned up vintage visions of ‘70s icons like Farrah Fawcett. With throwback styles already spotted all over the LFWM runways, the retro hairstyle is set to dominate in the coming months. Within the presented collection, the flicks harmonised with soft, draping fabrics but we foresee that fashion fans will contrast the style’s feminine energy with harder-edged streetwear and tailoring.

Mullets at Tom Ford

Once the sole domain of country music stars like Mr Billy Ray Cyrus pre-Old Town Road, the mullet has since made its return as the ‘do du jour of Miley Cyrus (clearly taking after her dad), Barbie Ferreira, Halsey and more. When Tom Ford sent models down the runway in shaggy ‘70s mullets for AW20, it barely rose an eyebrow. The mullet is back, baby.

Side Bangs at MSGM

Remember 2008, when you could barely see out of your right eye due to the massive side fringe sweeping across your face? Well, this might not be a memory that can stay locked in the past much longer. MSGM is heralding the comeback of the side bang (and the temporary loss of your perisperhal vision) for AW20. This time around, keep hair texture full and fluffy – and keep a healthy distance from the black hair dye.
