Raissa is very online

The Mark Ronson signee gives us the lowdown on the memes and guilty pleasure tracks to get through Lockdown 2.0.

As we get ready for lockdown 2.0, memories of pubs, eating out and generally just going outside are fading into distant memory. Now that our social lives get set to painfully shrink once more, we’re ready to dive into TikTok, IG and Twitter to keep ourselves entertained during the joyless winter months. To give us a helping hand, we’ve called in rising singer-songwriter and all-around cool girl Raissa.

Growing up in Kuala Lumpur with Spanish and Franco-Algerian heritage, she ended up moving to London to study at legendary art school Central Saint Martins, plugging herself into the UK capital’s creative scene in the process. Now signed to Mr Ronson’s Zelig label, Raissa is strongly in control of her own creative vision: writing and producing her own songs and even directing her signature Y2K-style videos.

We slide into her DMs to hear about her earliest Internet memories and the memes she recommends for the next period of self-isolation.

@hungermagazine: What’s your earliest Internet memory?

@thisisraissa: Watching the “Lollipop” music video by Mika on YouTube at my neighbour’s house, it was my first time on YouTube.

@hungermagazine: What language is your phone in?

@thisisraissa: English! But I have a French and Spanish keyboard for when I text my parents.

@hungermagazine: What are your five most-used emojis?

@thisisraissa: 💫🚀♥🥂 I’m sparkly and have a lot of feelings.

@hungermagazine: You’ve switched to private mode on Spotify: what are you listening to?

@thisisraissa: I have no shame, I’ll listen to Paris Hilton and Nickleback in public.

@hungermagazine: Do you use dating apps? Which ones?

@thisisraissa: I used to but haven’t in over a year. Hinge was the one I used when I did!

@hungermagazine: Have you ever been blocked?

@thisisraissa: Yeah, a dude ghosted me but he came back grovelling about a month later. They always come back.

@hungermagazine: Last person you stalked on IG?

@thisisraissa: Simone Istwa, I stalk her once a week.

@hungermagazine: What’s your most-used app?

@thisisraissa: Notes, Instagram and Clue because I’m always writing things down, I enjoy looking at things and sharing things to look at and because period tracking has changed my life.

@hungermagazine: What’s the longest amount of time you can go without being on your phone?

@thisisraissa: I had a shoot on Sunday and I didn’t have any service for 12 hours, so 12 hours?

@hungermagazine: Favourite meme?

@thisisraissa: A golden retriever staring longingly into the distance with “what the fuck is oatmeal” written above it.
