‘Saltburn’: Everything we know about Jacob Elordi and Barry Keoghan’s upcoming twisted drama

Emerald Fennell is back in the director's chair with a debaucherous tale of the British elite set to hit screens this autumn.

After multiple side quests, including playing a pregnant Midge in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Emerald Fennell has returned to the director’s chair for Saltburn. The upcoming film follows on from the critical success of her directorial debut in 2020, Promising Young Woman, which earned her an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, amongst a string of other nominations during the award season.

The highly anticipated film is complete with a star-studded cast. Barry Keoghan will be at the forefront in his first lead role (finally), playing the role of scouser Oliver Quick. Meanwhile, Keoghan is joined by Euphoria star and Australian heartthrob, Jacob Elordi, who appears as the aristocratic Felix Catton. Alongside the breakthrough stars, seasoned actors like Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant and Carey Mulligan will also star in supporting roles to add to this twisted story.

Though much of the plot has been deliberately kept under wraps, as the recent trailer suggests, Fennell looks set to offer us a glimpse into a world of upper-class debauchery as Felix invites university mate and misfit Oliver to spend the summer at the family estate, aptly named Saltburn.

In a story said to be similar in tone to that of The Talented Mr. Ripley but set in the early noughties with a soundtrack reminiscent of the not-so-distant era, we’re not quite sure what to expect yet. Although Fennell did jokingly tell Vanity Fair, “the thing is we are all disgusting perverts, aren’t we?” in reference to the tone of the upcoming movie, so anticipate something raunchy.

We expect the drama-thriller will do well for Fennell once again in the award syndicate at the end of the year, given it’s already been positively received by critics after a test screening in California. Another Fennell masterclass incoming? It’s certainly looking that way.

Saltburn is set to hit screens on September 24th this year, after opening at BFI’s London Film Festival on October 5th.
