Stella McCartney’s sustainability efforts are industry wide

A move in the eco-friendly direction...

The self dubbed “eco- weirdo” has challenged sustainability head on with her eponymous label for the past five years  and has completely transformed her practices to compete in an industry that so greatly contributes to the global climate crisis. LVMH announced a minority stake in the Stella McCartney corporation, in addition to appointment of the designer’s post as advisor to the executive Committee members.

Though LVMH have aimed for greater efforts towards a more sustainable corporation it doesn’t go amiss the influence that having Stella McCartney, a veteran, as an advisory body. Not only has the brand completely eradicated fur and leather from their repertoire, but they have been sourcing fibers including wool to leverage the quality of animal welfare in addition to analyzing the ways in which sourcing special fibers have largely affected deforestation. Recycling nylon and polyester and the continued research into finding new modes of creating silks and cashmere.

McCartney announced that “The passion and commitment they expressed toward the Stella McCartney brand alongside their belief in the ambitions and our values as the global leader in sustainable luxury fashion was truly impressive.” and added “The chance to realize and accelerate the full potential of the brand alongside Mr. Arnault and as part of the LVMH family, while still holding the majority ownership in the business, was an opportunity that hugely excited me.”

So, what does this mean for the future of LVMH? Hopefully, a long lasting commitment to upholding the Stella McCartney ethos that are mutually upheld and further developed. This is an exciting precedence but not merely achievable by simply tackling one major corporation’s eco footprint.
