‘Stranger Things’ fans rejoice – The Upside Down is coming to the West End

We’ve already gotten theatre versions of hit shows like the Peaky Blinders and, weirdly, The Great British Bake Off, but now sci-fi fans have something to sink their teeth into – a West End adaptation of Stranger Things.

Netflix announced that the play, titled Stranger Things: The First Shadow, will premiere later this year at London’s Phoenix Theatre. The show will be “rooted in the mythology” of the series and was written by Stranger Things writer and co-executive producer Kate Trefry from an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne and Trefry. The production will be helmed by Tony-winning director Stephen Daldry, with co-direction from Justin Martin.

The play takes place in 1959, is set in the same location as the show Hawkins, Indiana, and will follow the story of a young Jim Hopper. It will also feature Henry Creel, the telepathic character who became a prominent figure in the show’s fourth season.

The Duffer brothers said in a statement that the theatre adaptation is “at turns surprising, scary, and heartfelt. You will meet endearing new characters, as well as very familiar ones, on a journey into the past that sets the groundwork for the future of Stranger Things. We’re dying to tell you more about the story but won’t – it’s more fun to discover it for yourself. Can’t wait to see you nerds in London!”

While we eagerly anticipate the fifth and final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, the chance to experience ‘The Upside Down’ in person is a perfect way to hold fans over.
