The first trailer for Sydney Sweeney’s whistleblower movie ‘Reality’ has arrived

Sweeney plays the role of Reality Winner, a former intelligence contractor convicted of leaking a report about Russian interference in the US election in 2016.

The first trailer for Sydney Sweeney’s upcoming whistleblower movie, Reality, has finally been revealed. Since her performance as Cassie in Euphoria, many have coined her as a star on the rise and her time has now come to harness her talents for the big screen.

Sweeney stars in the film as Reality Winner, who pleaded guilty following her June 2017 arrest for leaking a US intelligence report that detailed Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The HBO Films project hits streaming service Max on May 29 after premiering earlier this year at the Berlin International Film Festival.

With a script from Tina Satter and James Paul Dallas, the movie adapts Winner’s FBI interrogation transcript. Satter previously staged the transcript as the play Is This a Room, which landed a Broadway run in 2021. Reality’s cast also includes Marchánt Davis and Josh Hamilton.

The tense trailer shows Winner, a former enlisted member of the US Air Force, getting interrogated at her home in Georgia. “I’m trying to deploy,” Sweeney says in the footage. “I’m not trying to be a whistleblower. That’s crazy.”

In preparation for her role, Sweeney went and spoke to Winner who was released from prison in 2021. At a conference for the film, Sweeney said: “I was able to Zoom with her… I would text her throughout the process.” In Satter’s directorial debut, the script has been built around the real transcripts during Winner’s questioning. “When Tina connected us, I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is a dream for an actor because I’m actually getting to speak with the real person and dive into their mind and what she’s gone through in her life.’”
