Two police officers taken to hospital after being stabbed in central London

The stabbing took place near Leicester square at 6 am, and is currently not thought to be terror-related.

Two police officers have been stabbed in central London and are currently in hospital, the Metropolitan Police says.

The stabbing took place near Leicester square at 6am and is currently not thought to be terror-related. The officers’ condition is not life-threatening.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, called the attack “utterly appalling” at a “momentous time for our country.” A man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assaulting an emergency worker. According to Scotland Yard, a taser was deployed and the man is also being treated at hospital.

Khan added: “These brave officers were doing their duty and assisting the public at this momentous time for our country. My thoughts and prayers are with them, their loved ones and police colleagues following this disgraceful attack.”

He also told the BBC “neither is in a life threatening situation.”
