Unseen icons captured by photographer Phil Griffin

From Paul McCartney to Pete Doherty, these images capture stars at their most candid.

Celebrating 25 years in film and photography, Phil Griffin’s work is as renowned as his subjects themselves. Encapsulating some of the world’s most iconic faces, his photography grants us a rare intimate look into even the most elusive of individuals. Whether a laughing Amy Winehouse, or a shy Paul McCartney, Griffin’s lens has been pointed at the last century’s most celebrated figures.

As Phil Griffin explains  “To me, a good photograph is never taken – but given. My job was to make myself available to capture these moments of stillness from each of my collaborators, so each portrait is a moment of pure truth and self-expression.” Offering us glimpses into unseen worlds and moments, the photos are unposed and authentic.

Showing at Brownsword Hepworth Gallery in London this month, the collection will sweep you into Phil Griffin’s time with the icons of our time. The first step of a wider project that aims to promote the wellbeing of young people through art and expression, a proportion of the proceeds made at Unseen Icons by Phil Griffin: 25 Years in Film & Photography will be donated to support the Amy Winehouse Foundation which works to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people.
