Vivienne Westwood wants you to know who she’s voting for this election

The British designer has created election artwork characterising the leaders of the two leading parties: one's a devil, the other's an eco-angel. It's not hard to tell who's who.

Vivienne Westwood is not one to keep quiet on the issues that matter. In recent months, however, her activism has gone into turbo-drive. Not only has she been demonstrating with Extinction Rebellion outside the London BP offices, she’s been protesting the extradition of Julian Assange with the one and only M.I.A.

Not one for taking her foot off the pedal, the woman who once declared  “I hate England” and came out in favour of Scottish independence on the catwalk (despite being, urm, English last time we checked) is at it again. This time, she’s turned her creative talents to making imagery that hammers home the differences between casting a vote for Labour and pinning your allegiances to the Conservatives.

Depicting the leader of the opposition as a green-fingered gardener of progress, brandishing a bouquet of EU stars, Jeremy Corbyn is represented by a smiley-faced figure bedecked in an apron with the slogan; “what’s good for the planet is good for the economy.” Our current PM, on the other hand,  is depicted as a Trump-lite (“Trumpette”) with devilish horns. The cartoons make reference to each politician’s electoral priorities, such as Corbyn’s vows to promote a green British economy and safeguard public services  versus Boris Johnson’s desire to broker a trade deal with the US, possibly at the expense of the NHS.

For Westwood, this general election boils down to a simple choice between good and evil.  “One is a devil, one wants to make the world a better place,” she says, referencing our lead candidates for PM. “This is the most important election of the human race – you have to vote Corbyn!” she tells HUNGER.
