‘X-Files’ creator says Ryan Coogler is rebooting franchise with a “diverse cast”

The iconic series aired in 1993 before ending in 2002 and returning for two seasons in 2018.

Two-time Oscar-nominated director behind Marvel’s Black Panther, Ryan Coogler, is reportedly developing a new X-Files series with a “diverse cast.”

In a conversation during CBC’s The Coast, Chris Carter, the creator of the original 1990’s sci-fi series, revealed: “I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount the X-Files with a diverse cast. So he’s got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory.”

Originally airing back in 1993, the influential FOX series followed two F.B.I. agents, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), who go about investigating paranormal and extraterrestrial cases. Carter said the show would be totally different today as today, “we’re steeped in conspiracies,” he said. “The X-Files dealt with a central conspiracy, but now the world is so full of conspiracies that I think that it would be a different show.”

Carter previously mentioned in 2018 that a reboot is likely. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the time, he said: “There’s an appetite for more in the future – it’s just a matter of figuring out how to get it done.”

Most recently, Coogler released the follow-up to Black Panther titled Wakanda Forever, which he co-wrote and directed. The film received recognition on the awards circuit, including five Oscar nominations.
