[D]esigned specifically to be accessible to everyone and anyone on Instagram, FKA twigs has launched AVANTgarden. Described by the artist as “part magic, part memoir”, the magazine is available only on the social media platform and can be read by clicking through the Insta ‘slide’ feature. Creatively directed by FKA herself, the inaugural issue is named ‘ROOTS. SHOCK. BEAUTY.” and celebrates braided afro-hair.
Featuring work from loyal collaborators stylist Matthew Joseph and hair stylist Rio Sreedharan (who apparently created all the braid styles in one day), as well as editor Suzannah Pettigrew. Photographed by duo Reece and Dean, the work was inspired by black barber shop imagery, making the vibrant hair styles pop against simple backdrops. A celebration of cultural heritage and reinventing tradition, FKA twigs is a cultural polymath who knows how to make meaningful and innovative creations.
Check out the first issue of the magazine below, and stay tuned for more Insta issues on @FKAtwigs hopefully on the way very soon.
