[A]zekel has quietly been carving out a very credible niche for himself over the past couple of years in UK R&B circles and after the release over the summer of his Raw, Vol 2 EP plus a supporting slot on Massive Attack’s last tour (a band who know a great soul voice when they hear one), next year could prove to be the Nigerian-born London-raised and based singer, songwriter, producer’s breakthrough. The UK has consistently thrown up unique soul voices over the years and in Azekel, it feels safe to say we’ve unearthed another.
After releasing debut EP Circa in 2013, he had a critical hit on 2014 with the release of single “New Romance”, which so the caught the attention of Prince he shared the track via Twitter. Certainly not your run of the mill shout out.
We caught up with one of the most exciting prospects around at the moment to talk about his creative process, why having something to say is so important as an artist and why he’ll always stay a few steps ahead of himself.
