[L]ast time we featured Bex’s work, she was capturing the UK’s biker subculture, today Bex has turned her camera on sumo wrestlers in Japan. Chonmage is the traditional haircut sported by Sumo wrestlers, it’s a unique world deeply entrenched in tradition and controversy. See her incredible portraits of these non-conforming athletes below.
“I recently visited Tokyo to see these spiky haired wresters for myself and to gain a better understanding of sumo in general. There is nothing quite like the sound of one sumo smacking into another, and was more than anything I had expected on my early morning treks to the sumo stables. Sumo wrestlers mean dedication. They practice in sumo stables and live here together (unless you get married then you can escape) under strict conditions; specifically meals — ideally a sumo wrestler weighs on average 148 kg eating a daily diet of 10,000 calories, with no breakfast and lots of chankonabe, a stew composed of fish, meat and vegetables plus lots of alcohol.”
