[W]hilst the male body these days comes in myriad forms, there remains a suspicion (amongst ad execs and magazines it seems) that it is the sculpted, athletic and muscular body shape that is the most desirable. It’s why gyms and t-shirts are overflowing with blokes the size of refrigerators, it’s why there’s a market for protein drinks and steroids. We live in an age where the media representation of body types is under more scrutiny than ever and the fake, photo-shopped world of underwear models clashes awkwardly with real life.
So, in defiance of the “high” standards set by billboards and in celebration of the fact that not everybody looks like Cristiano Ronaldo with their shirt off, we commissioned photographer Emma Gibney to take a series of intimate portraits of real men. No bullshit.
