[B]est known as the lead signer of trio Sonder, Brent Faiyaz is a 22-year-old on the rise. Tomorrow brings the day of his debut album, Sonder Son, a 13-track project for Friday the 13th. Featuring production from Dpat and Atu, the members which make up their three-piece, the album will be his first solo release since last year’s A.M. Paradox EP.
A Maryland native, Faiyaz has been spotted by numerous big shots – Lil Yachty, Drake and DJ Mustard all showing support – but he himself likes to keep things local. Speaking to Hunger, the singer described how “while I respect everyone and what they do, we keep shit really in-house over here. It’s not really about how popular you are or who you know, but if we’re cool enough to kick it, we can work. It’s gotta be organic. I don’t want an awkward session.” Growing up in ‘Little America’ had a big affect on his music, he described how “the people I know, the things I went through – I put it all in the music”. This intimacy shines through, his gentle tenor and overt falsetto brings through 90s chill vibes which stay authentic and distinct.
