Five film photographers to follow right now

Point and shoot.

The advent of digital undoubtedly revolutionized photography. The take-and-check option gives everyone a second chance, whilst myriad settings and options enable us to create some of the most striking, original images ever taken on camera. Still, though, there is a romanticism attached to shooting on film. The spontaneity and candour of photographs on film is instantly recognisable, here are five artists doing it really well right now.

LAURYN HOLMQUIST

Model and photographer Lauryn Holmquist’s work perhaps best embodies the candid nature of 35mm photography, contrasting the coastal and urban landscapes of New York and Los Angeles, the two cities between which she divides her time, with monochrome and washed out neon to perfect effect.

CHLOE SHEPPARD

Chloe Sheppard is shooting girls on film. Her aesthetic is dreamy and nostalgic, with a thread of melancholy running through. The world she’s created references old school Americana, VHS, 90s bad girls like Drew and Winona and the moodiness of film noir.

LAUREN LEPORE

Lauren Lepore is a photographer working out of New York City. Exclusively shooting on 35mm film, her images are quintessential examples of film photography: spontaneous, often imperfect one-offs that capture inner city chaos rather than crisp, studio perfection.
