Get ready for the 90s hair clip revival in 2018

Slide into next season.

[M]ove over scrunchies (sorry Balenciaga)- there’s a new back-to-school accessories trend set to steal your crown next season. Literally. Get ready for the return of the humble hair clip.

Look back at the spring / summer 2018 shows and you’ll find the 90s detailing everywhere, from Simone Rocha’s princess-worthy pearl slides to a gold grip to embellish a deep side parting at JW Anderson.

“People love a new reason to experiment with different pieces of jewellery and adding them to your hair is a fun and exciting way to do so,” Matches Fashion Jewellery Buyer Patti Worth tells Hunger. “Our customers enjoy styling hair clips in a cooler and fresher way without being too girly.”

Like an Alice band, the hairpiece is often perceived as too girly, too Lolita-esque and far too bedazzling for everyday wear. But this season the embellishment takes a turn towards embracing individuality (Hair Clips have seen an 85% increase in saves the past year alone on Pinterest). Sure, it’s a fast-track way to ‘party hair’ if you’re all about the Mariah Carey blingage, but bejeweled barnets isn’t your only option, with disco-glam, eccentric and sporty styles dropping soon.

“The first brand we picked up for hair pieces was Alighieri whose designs are beautiful and classic coming in hairclips as well as hair ties,” Worth adds. “We then saw a real trend on the runway at the SS18 shows from brands like Simone Rocha, Gucci, Isabel Marant and Versace and as we start to see the new AW18 collections it’s clear that this trend is continuing to evolve.”
