[“][H]is are the only clothes in which I am myself. He is far more than a couturier, he is a creator of personality,” Hubert de Givenchy’s muse Audrey Hepburn said of the legendary designer, who has sadly passed away, aged 91. Ever since launching his debut couture collection in 1952 – Separates, a collection of stunning silken blouses and simple light floor-length skirts – Givenchy set the Parisian chic agenda and revolutionised luxe daywear for women on a global scale.
Alongside this, he also became famous for his fashion collaborations with Hollywood sweetheart, Audrey Hepburn. A long-lasting partnership was sparked on set in 1953 – “the friendship was really like a special love affair,” he said – where he was to dress the film star in Sabrina. Though he was expecting to costume a very different actress: Katharine Hepburn. He told The Independent in 2010, he actually “did not know who is Audrey Hepburn, because I did not see the first movies”.
