[I]f there’s one designer you can count on to awaken a crowd, after a month-long parade of shows, presentations and fashion parties, it’s Thom Browne. The American visionary made his big debut in the French capital yesterday, delivering the avant-garde goods and much more.
A moving, dreamy landscape scene with references to The Little Mermaid (models walked the runway with “Part of Your World” blaring through the speakers), layers upon layers of all-white-everything tulle creations, technicolour dream coats, mismatched plaids, “ice-cream” dresses adorned by two ballerinas partially en pointe. The proportions, ruffles and cuts: this standout collection was undoubtely an ode to couture, with a childlike twist. Browne’s show notes reveal the inspiration was an American in Paris, dreams of couture (“the most Parisian of all arts,” he says.) Running with the mythical theme, the star to close the show was not a model but a 8-foot white-lace unicorn.
