How can social media be toxic? And, is Instagram a good or bad thing for an artist?
Absolutely it can be toxic! But it can also be very liberating – like you make a proposition about a self that’s either accepted or rejected by the group. That can be reaffirming or that can be quite destructive.
It could be good or terrible. For some people it’s an open language, some people use the language itself and in their work and obviously there’s artists who are just posting on Instagram for better or for worse.
What’s some of your earliest memories of the internet?
I think chat rooms, probably one of my first sexual experiences as well. I was probably talking to 60-year-old men. I would have been about 14. There was a pre-second life environment where you could walk around as and avatar as well and I haven’t been able to find any images of it anywhere.
I quite enjoy a bunch of Influencer and fashion people – I kind of got into that when I was doing this Berthold campaign and watching how they operate. I am really into memes at the moment though, like @dominos_daddy. And love @fuck_jerry.
Do you have a favourite hashtag?
No I do not [laughs]. I’m quite interested in the ones people blast with just the image of them and just so that they get some traction and you end up creating these giant chunks of hashtags. And it must work because enough people do it!
