Aslan’s book Trompe L’Oeil investigates the social construct of beauty in a world where we ceaselessly curate ourselves online and reward each other’s appearances with the digital currency of Instagram likes. The wide variety of body parts photographed demonstrates that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what might make one person swipe left, might make another person swipe right. When anyone can make themselves look like Kim K with enough make up and the right camera angle, Aslan asks us to question what we see as beautiful and ugly in the face of beauty standards. While posing the question of what remains of what’s actually real and beautiful about our bodies behind these constructed images we post.
Trompe L’Oeil is Aslan’s third photography book, being released at the end of June in Berlin, so if you’re around in Berlin be sure to attend the launch party here, but otherwise check out some of Aslan’s series below and follow her Instagram @eyluelaslan for some really aesthetically pleasing images.
