[T]hree years ago, documentary photographer Daniel Reiter travelled from Berlin to Ethiopia to support his friend reuniting with her mother after 33 years. Exploring the vibrant capital ofAddis Ababa, he found himself immersed in the local skate culture – capturing a group of young skaters as they perfected their skills on every corner of the city’s streets.
This burgeoning subculture has grown into a movement in subsequent years, via Ethiopia Skate, an organisation that links Ethiopian youth with pro-skaters to exchange skills. Along the way Daniel has continued to document the scene, bringing along donations of streetwear and skateboards on each of his visits.
Celebrating the dexterity and creativity of the young people pushing the culture forward ‘Ethiopia Skates’ is a new exhibition at the Boxpark Croydon of Daniel’s images, curated by Jacob Roberts-Mensah. Preview inspiring the series below.
Ethiopia Skates is exhibiting at the Boxpark Shoreditch until 31st Jan
