“The best party of your life”: Andy Warhol, Grace Jones and more talk Studio 54

Icons on icons.

[F]rom Grace Jones to Jerry Hall, Liza Minelli to Andy Warhol, Studio 54 brought the coolest and the kookiest from around town. Co-founders Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager started the right club in the right city at the right time, riding the 1970s wave of personal freedom and sexual revolution, it was the hottest spot to be and reigned supreme for three years. From the booming open night in April 1977 where celebs and norms alike flocked to try and get through the queues of clubbers, it started as it meant to go on. Myra Scheer – an early 54 fan and later assistant to Rubell – exclaimed that “there was always a ton of people outside waiting to get in – people from all walks of life”.

But it sure did attract the best of the best, the coolest of the cool: think Diana Ross on stage, Bowie pulling shapes, Warhol snapping pics and of course Bianca Jagger riding in on a white horse. Here are some of those icon’s quotes reminiscing about the most iconic club around, here’s to Studio 54…
