[F]inding your signature scent is similar to listening to your favourite song over and over again: sure, you may sway to what’s trending on YouTube but you’ll never tire of Madonna’s 80s hits or Marvin Gaye’s Motown classics. Cult French brand Art Meets Art is bringing together both worlds, creating soulful scents inspired by pop culture icons and cult hits such as Like a Virgin and Sexual Healing. Ahead of the perfume’s UK launch next week at the Conran Shop on Marylebone High St, Hunger spoke to the founder Ali Kashani to find out more…
How is this brand different to many classic Parisian scents on the market right now?
We are one of the very few indie brands that’s created by the world’s top perfumers. For example, Alberto Morillas (creator of ‘Like a Virgin’ and ‘I put a Spell on you’) created some of the most iconic perfumes in 20th century: ‘CK One’, Acqua di Gio, Flower by Kenzo, to name only three. Creating a perfume collection with four of the world’s top perfumers is like creating a fashion collection with Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang behind it.
We create perfumes that have a huge emotional resonance; we revisit cult themes that are rooted in collective memory and talk to people’s hearts. We like to see ourselves as the Andy Warhol’s of perfume. We are actually transposing the creative process of Pop Art into the world of perfumes, which brings a unique emotional resonance to our work, in addition to a contemporary feel and a sense of wit. Perfume tends to be a very classic and conventional world – compared with fashion – we are bringing not only a truly original concept, but also a pop, irreverent, and with a sense of fun.
