The photographers that make us think of summer

Summer is here, kinda. No longer recognisable as a distinguished weather pattern, summer is more of a sporadic selection of warmer days interspersed with heavy rain.

Because of their infrequency, those sunny days give rise to a sense of immediacy, to now-or-never behaviours and and sometimes to indulgent hedonism. All this tends to be pretty photogenic, with long slow sunsets, daytrips and fewer inhibitions creating the optimum conditions for the kind of candid family-album photography that manages to create both a sense of nostalgia and excitement. Check out the work of five photographers who are doing exactly that right now.

Sarah Bahbah – @SARAHBAHBAH

Sarah Bahbah’s images are like your sexiest summer got a Netflix make over. LA-style aesthetics and cryptic captions musing on love, life and lust combine with plenty of images of water, laziness and clear blue skies to have us dreaming of endless summers and the slow-burning drama they bring.

Cameron Mcnee – @CAMERONMCNEE

Cameron McNee’s series The Skaters of Tompkins Square Park, perfectly captures long days skating in the oppressive heat of a New York summer. Recalling the images of Larry Clark, the series is an intimate portrait of youth and a masterclass in how to simply pass the time.

Alice Moitié – @ALICEMOITIE

Alice Moitié recently got kicked out of art school in Paris. Before that, she was photographic hedonistic summers in the south of France, the kind where time stands still and nudity is compulsory. Check out more of her photos of beautiful people under blue skies here.

Wiissa – @WIISSA0

Wiissa, made up of Wilson Philippe and Vanessa Hollander, are a loved up dream team photography duo from Miami. Shooting strictly on analogue, and capturing their friends clad in dreamy outfits that nod to the fashion of the 60s and 70s, their photographs create a nostalgia for summertime, youth and poolside fun.

Mike spears – @MIKESPEARZ

Swimming pools, octopi, running water, Mike Spears is a photographer from Brooklyn who adds a sense is the extraordinary to his summer snapshots. Somehow not everything is as it seems as unusual props and close ups give classic summertime aesthetics a whole new context.
