Everything we know about A24’s new star-studded film ‘Mother Mary’
The internet has been swirling with rumours of what the new A24 film Mother Mary will look like, and with every sneak peek revealed, the plotline and cast are being puzzled together. The film will be an “epic pop melodrama following a fictional musician and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer”, as reported by Deadline. Set to include Michaela Coel and Anne Hathaway as a fashion designer and popstar respectively, it has also been hinted that they will be partnering up to portray a lesbian power couple battling fame – and it’s safe to say fans are excited.
“Babe wake up! Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel playing lesbian lovers in upcoming movie news just dropped,” said one Twitter user when the news initially dropped. The plotline of the film is one we are familiar with in the recent years gone by, of a pop star trying to make it in the industry. The likes of A Star is Born cemented Lady Gaga’s real-star-turned-actor career, so perhaps Mother Mary will help Hathaway in the actor-turned-real-star department? Her experience singing in Les Miserables and Ella Enchanted would suggest a likely possibility.
Michaela Coel is also a Hollywood star set to build on her own successes of I May Destroy You, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and also the Mr and Mrs Smith reboot with Donald Glover that will be coming soon. Mother Mary will be directed by David Lowery who has shot a plethora of genres, including drama A Ghost Story, action The Green Knight, and romantic crime Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. His most recent project Peter & Wendy being released on Disney+ will see him now starting the script for the A24 popstar venture.
The cast and crew lineup are suggesting this will be another success for Lowery, with the soundtrack offering some of the real music industry’s best players. Both Charli XCX and Jack Antnonoff have been recruited to write songs for Hathaway’s character, with undoubtedly some killer performance sequences following. Charli announced the news on her own Instagram with the caption “Jack bout to get mothered”. Replies to this included “an A24 pop star movie with MOTHER in the title featuring Ella Enchanted songstress Anne Hathaway performing Charli XCX songs alongside Michaela Coel?!?? CINEMA IS BACK” and “this is the mothering of the century.”
The star-studded cast doesn’t end there however, as Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer is dubbed to play Michaela Coel’s assistant Hilda, and Kaia Gerber, Alba Baptista, Jessica Brown-Findlay, and Sian Clifford are also set to join.
The film will begin filming this year in North Rhineland Westphalia in Germany, with expectations of a release date buzzing around the late 2024 mark.
