HUNGER’s guide to the weird and wonderful ‘fits we can expect to see at Coachella

From Daisy Jones suede chic to beat-up red cowboy boots, we predict the hottest looks that will grace the Colorado desert this weekend.

This weekend music fans will return to the desert for North America’s largest and most anticipated festival: Coachella. And whilst the 22nd edition has an impressively star-studded lineup of Bad Bunny, Frank Ocean, BLACKPINK, and Gorillaz, we’re keeping an eye out for this year’s most stylish attendees.

Expected to draw in crowds of around 125k people, the VIP event has previously been the source of some major fashion inspiration. Think back to Vanessa Hudgens and her flower crowns, Harry Styles’ famously tight-fit sequin jumpsuit, Taylor Swift’s bleach blonde bob and beat-up sneakers, and Kendall Jenner’s bikini tops and waistcoats. It’s celebs in their natural environment, adapting to the sweltering heat of California and stripping off their red carpet stilettos in favour of a comfortable alternative. Essentially, it’s major inspo for our summer wardrobe.

From 70s disco cowboy vibes to Euphoria meets indie sleaze, here are some of our predictions for the must-have items from Coachella 2023…

Disc belts and suede chic

If you’ve been on Depop recently, you will have seen the classic disc belts making their round at absurd prices. The staple 70s hippie-inspired accessory has risen in interest thanks to the likes of the Daisy Jones & The Six TV show set in LA in the zeitgeist of American rock ‘n’ roll. It’s the perfect lookbook into the times of prime Californication of music and fashion, and will undoubtedly be the vibe which many are modelling their outfits upon. It’s shapeless peasant skirts, suede waistcoats with floral embroidery, and the hottest item of the season: the disc belt. It must be thrown around the hips as if a last thought for the perfect Daisy Jones-like fit, accompanied by some beach waves and grown-out bangs. Chunky bracelets and cord necklaces with gemstones and crystals will be the cherry on top.

Yeehaw hats and regrettable tatts

A sandy desert in America can only mean one thing: cowboys are back. Not in the cattle herding on a horse sense, but in the more glitzy interpretation many favour nowadays. Fringed jackets and the classic cowboy hat are sure to keep festival-goers cool in the rising heat They will be joined hand-in-hand by the cowboy boot – beat up and second-hand for extra comfort (and the environment ). Many will be opting for a standout colour, perhaps hot pink or red were you to take a leaf out of Ted’s book on How I Met Your Mother. With the rise of trendy scrapbook-style tattoos, we have seen many a cowboy iteration find its way onto sleeves, and in this instance, will pull the look together perfectly. It may be regrettable in a few years, but who cares when you’re watching Frank Ocean in the blistering heat….

Out-of-this-world accessories

Retrofuturism will see the 70s idea of 2023 might look like take hold. Whilst we can’t really promise flying cars and robot assistants (yet), the fashion will adapt to mini skirts and alien-inspired sunnies – maybe the odd Poppy Lissiman shades or two. We are expecting to see the exaggerated sunnies come in oversized bug-like iridescent shapes as well as teeny square numbers that sit on the bridge of the nose. Silhouettes should take inspo from both past and future, and sit alongside wardrobe items like metallic chainmail and Matrix monochrome for the ultimate vibe.

Euphoria meets indie sleaze

If you’re going to watch bands at a music festival, perhaps trying to blag your way into the backstage viewing area, then you need to dress for the occasion. A hot mess should be the vibe – Kate Moss at Glasto in her Hunter wellies meets Cassie from Euphoria’s smudged glittery eyes, with hot pant denim cutoffs and camisoles keeping the wardrobe light whilst the makeup does the talking. Plus, the look will only improve with time and is entirely gig-resistant in its premise – the more partying you do, the hotter you will look.

Skinny scarves and sexy stickers

It’s a tad bit Y2K meets Euphoria beauty once again, but we can’t deny it will be one of Coachella’s major influences. Duo Simihaze has concocted the ultimate Coachella brand after playing their DJ sets at the festival for years, focusing on a morning-to-night range that promotes self-expression. Their funky face stickers and sparkly eye gems are Insta staples and have been selling out the weekend before every year of the festival. This time around, it will be all about the fragmented iridescent gems that act as a shadow and can be worn with prime 00s accessories. A skinny scarf and pair of diamante sunnies like Sharpay from High School Musical are sure to do the trick.
